Santee Alley is not your mother's Costa Mesa Mall. This colorful and gritty (I emphasize "gritty") gem of the world's top fashion and accessory bazaars is a three block open-air alley-way in the heart of LA's 90 block/1000+ store Fashion District.  It's a shopaholics/fashionista's total rush.

If you're planning on going to Santee Alley -- which, come on, you have to because the deals and merchandise is all about paradise what with 300+ wholesale and retail vendors selling the latest styles in everything from shoes to dresses and shhh! knock-offs at rock-bottom prices  --  there are few things to know about this international destination.

The most obvious FYI is location. Santee Alley is located between Santee Street and Maple Avenue starting on Olympic Boulevard.

Click on the map below for the best DIRECTIONS.

.

Most of the stores both in Santee Alley (SA) and the 90-block area known as LA's Fashion District (LAFD) sell wholesale and retail. If a store only sells wholesale there will be a sign in the window reading solo mayoreo.

Also, most stores, both wholesale and retail don't accept credit cards, so take plenty of cash. There are lots of ATM's located through LAFD. The most prominent being between Starbucks and McDonalds. (Right?)

Santee Alley is open 365 days a year, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

SATURDAYS are definitely the busiest days in the Alley. I like to get there at about 9:00 am. As I said, there's a Starbucks and lots of coffee shops, pizza joints, taco stands, and the hot dog carts get going about 10 am. The hot dogs, wrapped in bacon, and
covered in peppers are amazing, delicious and a must have! You can also snack on the spicy fruit cocktails sold on almost every corner.

Like any shopping bazaar, bargaining is encouraged. Store owners are more likely to lower the prices if you buy more than one item.

Most stores do not have dressing rooms.

Merchandise varies from day to day. If you see something you like -- buy it now, it will not be there later.

BRING WATER BOTTLES. SA and LAFD can get HOT. You want to stay hydrated and NOT spend a ton of $ on water. Wear a hat and sunscreen too.

Serious shoppers bring rolling luggage to carry water with plenty of room for purchases.

Public restrooms are located in the food courts which dot LAFD; the most accessible to SA is right on Maple street. You will need quarters for these. You can always go to Starbucks or Micky D's. Stay clear of Burger King.

Lots of inexpensive roof-top parking.

We've lusted and loved our locally based designer
Geren Ford's signature silky silhouettes that have always given us sexy luxe style and comfort to our bods.

Only a genius could take those same elements and create a cushy femme pump a la D'Orsay for our feet. Or gladiator influenced sandals. Or ballet flats.

What? That's right. Geren Ford recently launched her fab shoe line! You can't believe what's in store for fall.

Average Price: $295

From the Editor

I've always liked to get my chic on by checking out the lo's
and high's -- the street scene as well as designer runways.
I like the mix and how it creates fashion that we really wear
and can really afford.

The three big winners on the scene this summer are
definitely the "morning after" clutch, seductive and sleek
in everything from metallic gold and silver to solid bright's;
the toga top and dress (show that shoulder! in animal or floral
print); and the tote....um, wait.

OK. So here's the thing. I've always been a tote fan. Years ago Esprit made the best. Then remember Kate Spade's original? But seriously, after what I've recently seen....I'm done and done.

The totes I've spotted on the street and the designer runways, in stores, online, in catalogues are tired looking, awkward, dull and....best word I can think of -- flaccid. No thanks.

For me, send the messenger! I want something colorful, bold, a statement. And I serendipitously found it.

I ran into Kristy Hessman, one-time newspaper reporter (who had once done an article on me) is now a handbag entrepreneur importing from Vietnam fabulous recycled ag feedbag messengers, as well as cosmetic travel bags and recycled rubber handbags. I'm getting a pink AND pale yellow messenger! Love the piggies playing soccer! Oh yeah. Read Green Scene below for more info.

This place has great food. You have to try:
#1-Magic Eggplant (kashk o' bodemjon) - not really a fan of eggplant, but really good.
#57-Lobia Polo (basmati rice mixed with special tomato sauce, green beans, and minced fillet mignon) Yummy!
